WHAT IS A SPLASH AND DASH?
A Splash and Dash is a fun and fast-growing sport that combines running
and swimming, and focuses on fun and participation over
competition. The Oakland Triathlon Club (OTC) wants to introduce kids and families to how great the
multisport life is through this USAT sanctioned event!
Course
lengths vary by age (see course descriptions below). This celebrates
participation! Timing will be unofficial, and everyone wins.
We
will have volunteers around supporting safety and fun, making sure kid
take breaks mid-swim if need -- and that they catch their breath before
heading on towards the run course. Every competitor will be celebrated
as they cross the finish line and will go home with an official USAT Splash and Dash medal. Come on out and join the fun!
LOCATION
The event will take place at Northeastern University Oakland Campus (Mills College) at the Trefethen Aquatic Center and around the campus trail. The college is located at 5000 Macarthur Blvd in Oakland, CA.
THE COURSE
THE ENTIRE COURSE IS ON THE MILLS AT NORTHEASTERN CAMPUS!
- 6-10 year olds: 100 yard swim, 1k run
- 11-15 year olds: 200 yard swim, 2k run
The swim will take place in the Trefethen pool, which has 25 yard lanes. Ages 6-10 will do 4 lengths, and ages 11-15 will do 8 lengths. Volunteers will help count laps.
The transition from swim to run will take the youth to the the campus track area before doing a loop around a nearby section of campus . The run course will be supported by cheering, excited volunteers. 11-15 year olds will do two loops.
Note: triathletes usually swim and run in the same clothes! There will not be a changing area, but we will have an area for youth to put clothes on over their swimsuit if they aren't wearing a triathlon suit.

7:30am registration opens
8:15am pre-race instructions (all participants must check-in by 8:15!)
8:30am Ages 11-15 start, in 3 heats
9:00am Ages 6-10 start, in 3 heats
9:45am Celebration & Dance Party
Participants will receive a goody bag, finisher’s medal, and custom swim cap.
REGISTRATION DETAILS
All registrants will receive a code for $10 off USA Triathlon Youth Premier membership, so they become USAT members until their 18th birthday for only $15! We also have scholarships available to waive registration cost for up to TEN (10) youth. Contact us using the email button below to get your code.
- EARLY BIRDS! Registration prior to 9/1 will be $27.50
- After 9/1, the price will be $32.50.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
- Is there a bike ride? No! This is just a swim & run, hoping to invite kids into multi-sport in an accessible way.
- Are there places and awards? This event is focused on participation, so there will be no official timing or places/awards given. All participants will get a medal.
- Do I change clothes between the swim and the run? We will not have changing facilities available. We recommend wearing "jammer" type swimsuit where you can add shirt/shorts after, or a or kids triathlon suit aka "kit" that will dry quickly when you head on the run. We will have a transition area to put shoes and a shirt, and affix the run bib.
- Can I rest on the swim? Absolutely! We picked a pool swim so kids would feel safe and confident they could finish the swim, rests included. We'll have volunteers cheering you from both sides of the swim lane.
- Do I need a USAT membership? Yes, you do... but USAT has given us a significant discount on a Premier membership. So you can buy a one year for $10, or (with the discount) a membership valid until your kid's 18th birthday for $15 rather than the usual $25.
